Cavemen Preferred Blondes

Incredible how public research funds are spent! I guess we really need more studies on blondes for the sake of humanity's progess.

Sunday times, 26 February 2006 by Roger Dobson and Abul Taher

The modern gentleman may prefer blondes. But new research has found that it was cavemen who were the first to be lured by flaxen locks. According to the study, north European women evolved blonde hair and blue eyes at the end of the Ice Age to make them stand out from their rivals at a time of fierce competition for scarce males.
The study argues that blond hair originated in the region because of food shortages 10,000-11,000 years ago. Until then, humans had the dark brown hair and dark eyes that still dominate in the rest of the world.
Almost the only sustenance in northern Europe came from roaming herds of mammoths, reindeer, bison and horses. Finding them required long, arduous hunting trips in which numerous males died, leading to a high ratio of surviving women to men.
Lighter hair colours, which started as rare mutations, became popular for breeding and numbers increased dramatically, according to the research, published under the aegis of the University of St Andrews.

“Human hair and eye colour are unusually diverse in northern and eastern Europe (and their) origin over a short span of evolutionary time indicates some kind of selection,” says the study by Peter Frost, a Canadian anthropologist. Frost adds that the high death rate among male hunters “increased the pressures of sexual selection on early European women, one possible outcome being an unusual complex of colour traits.”

Bijlmer - Joyful Noises in Parking Lots

Large scale city expansion plans were developed in the sixties in Amsterdam. The Dutch capital faced a shortage of housing as a result of the post-war economic boom and a growing population. Thus the Bijlmermeer, Amsterdam's South-East Distict, was built: the city of the future. Broad lanes, concrete highrise buildings, big stretches of green, where pedestrian areas never intersect car lanes, so that children could safely play outside.
The future seemed so bright in the sixties...

Today the 'Bijlmer' is notorious. As most of the (white) middle class people moved out, migrants from all over the world, and especially the former Dutch colonies moved in. The Bijlmer became synonymous with crime, violence, drugs, prostitution and poverty.
The Amsterdam adminstration even decided to rename the Bijlmermeer into 'Zuid-Oost' (South-East) in a attempt to get a better reputation.

But ... the light shines in the darkness, and, blessed are the poor, blessed are those who hunger, and, blessed are those who weep.

In one of the poorest neighbourhoods of the Netherlands, Christ is proclaimed on every corner. Just over 75,000 inhabitants, and perhaps over a 100 Churches! Every Sunday the Gospel is preached to 130 nationalities, in Dutch, Spanish, Papiamento, English, Ghanese, Sranangtongo,...

The planners in the sixties did not think Church buildings would be necessary, after all, religion was considered archaic and soon to be extinct anyway. However, today, people gather in empty parking lots to worship and to listen to the Word. (The local authorities are still hesitant to build Church buildings).

As I sat at in one parking lot today, among a Dutch Antillean (Caribean) congregation. I could hear noises from neighbouring parking lots, where other brothers and sisters gathered to praise the Lord. I was filled with joy, here was yet another proof that God cares for the poor, oppressed and the broken. He lifts people from the darkest places. Jesus visits the places where we do not want to be.

City planners still crunch their minds over Amsterdam's South-East district. Local politicians still struggle to see any hope between the concrete buildings. But God has great hopes in this 'hopeless' suburbia.

Forced Child Abortion in Rotterdam II

Commentary in Trouw by Pastor Polhuis, Monday 20 February (translated by Sander)

The wrong suggestions about forced child abortion by the Rotterdam alderman Van den Anker are motivated by a real concern over the suffering of abused children.

The Rotterdam alderman Marianne van den Ankder pleaded for forced child abortions on her weblog, which woke up politicians from the left and from the right. This was unacceptable. Critics found a new Eva Braun to fight against, a dangerous hearless woman, on a mission to kill defenseless children en take away the rights of people to have children. Someone who stads for state terrore, including the policing of abortion. Someone who should leave politics.

True, Van den Ankers proposal is not smart, indeed it goes too far. But with me, it was telling in an other way. A few months ago Van den Aniker vitited the city quarter where I work as a pastor. I gave a guided tour for her and some other people through our neighbourhood. We also visited an elementary school. The visit took longer than we expected. For a while the alderman walked around the school premises with a child in her arms. The child would not let go. First we thought that she just wanted to be photographed and get good publicity. But there were no photographers.
Then I saw that the alderman was very emotional.
She told me that the girl was afraid. The girl told her that she did not want to go home because her parants and her brother would hit her. After the visit, the alderman tried everything to help the family. She was furious about what happened to the girl. She was furious about the parents and the care attendants, who did not deal with this problem.
This image of the alderman came to my mind lately. We witnessed that this youg woman was really touched by the suffering of a child. In her position she deals with these situations all the time. She really tries to do something, but she just cannot change the reality child abuse, even if she is in a powerful position as an alderman.
She sees children's lives ruined en organizations agains child abuse failing.

Before, I thought this instance was to personal to share. But now I would like to let people know about this. In her proposal I hear her powerlessness over the fact that children's lives are ruined. We cannot let this happen in our city.

The hot debate should not start with Van den Ankers' proposals, but with her anger. I would like to support her in that anger. I think child welfare organizations should also support her, also the Antillean welware organization. That would be more fruitful than putting up an angry because of the comparison between Antillian teenagers and mentally handicapped people.
In our neighbourhood, you will see beautiful Antillean women who - in a few years time - change to ruined and low-spirited women, who struggle with the care of their children. The men have left them. These are problems which should be addressed on the highest political and societal levels. If that happens, Van den Anker will also realize that her proposal for forced child abortion does not belong to the political debate.

Forced Child Abortion in Rotterdam

Nederlands Dagblad, Thursday 16 February (Translated by Sander), original in Dutch

ROTTERDAM – Pregnant drug addicts, mentally disabled and teens (from the Netherlands Antilles) must undergo forced abortion, according to a Rotterdam alderman Van den Anker (public health). "sometimes it is better that to say: this child should not be born".

Van den Anker, alderman for Leefbaar Rotterdam (political party), presented his ideas for forced abortion yesterday at the publication of new figures concerning child abuse in Rotterdam. It reported that 796 out of the 10000 questioned had been maltreated as a child. 288 said that they had been sexually abused.
"In the Netherlands the discontinuation of pregnancies and compulsory contraceptives are a taboo", according to Van den Anker.

If it were up to her this taboo will be addressed. Forced abortion and compulsory use of contraceptives should become a possibility for certain social groups.
Van den Anker: "these would include children of addicted parents, Antillian teenager mothers and mentally disabled. According to several scientists it is clear that these children run an unacceptable high risk to grow up in an environment of violence, neglect maltreatment and sexual abuse."

"By aborting unborn children this problem is dealt with," the alderman suggests. "care attendants are able enough to assess whether a situation goes wrong. If a drug addicted, HIV positive woman is in her seventh week of pregnancy, we must act! I am not Christian to an extent that I would consider an unborn baby 'life'. The risk that something will go wrong is too high."

"Absurd," Van den Anker’s colleague alderman, L. Geluk (Christian Democratic Party) replies, whose stance is diametrically opposed to the view of Leefbaar Rotterdam. "This is an absurd and completely idiotic proposal", the spokesman of Geluk says, "I do not believe that the government can enter such an important area in the personal lives of people."

Geluk hopes that Van den Akker only suffers ‘election fever’. "If not, then Leefbaar Rotterdam is showing its most extremist face." The Christian Democratic alderman recognises that there is a serious child abuse problem in Rotterdam. "But this solution is ridiculous. One must try to guide and help these parents. This type of extremist solutions are not helpful."

Also the ChristenUnie/SGP (Christian Union Party/Reformed Party) in the Rotterdam City Council was shocked by the words of the Van den Anker. "This plan puts aside all norms and values", R. Oosterhoff says "She tries to win votes by saying harsh things, but she only divides the Rotterdammers."

Like alderman Geluk, Oosterhoff pleads for a better guidance for parents. "the government should invest in teaching values and norms to these people. By supporting them in parenthood, you can solve a greater part of the problem."

According to Van den Anker prevention or foster parents are not always better alternatives than compulsory abortion. "Sometimes a child in the uterus has already suffered so much damage, that it just would not make sense. Then it is better that to say: this child simply cannot be born. However, for older children who are abused, rehabilitation could be a solution," according to the alderman. "These children could be placed under the supervision of the state, so that they will learn to love and feel affection."

The Christian Union/Reformed Party in Rotterdam will act against the alderman’s proposal. "We will interrogate her on this subject", Oosterhoff says. However, he does not expect that the ideas of Van den Anker will be become realized soon. "Apart from the political situation after the elections, I think that there would be too many legal obstacles to make a policy out of this proposal."

Singleness and the Rest

"It is strange to be known so universally and yet to be so lonely"
(Albert Einstein)

"Pray that your loneliness may spur you into finding something to
live for, great enough to die for."
(Dag Hammarskjold)

I am single. I used to go to a Church where only a married man was considered a mature man. This notion affected my view of singleness, and, it became an obstacle for further spiritual growth. Indeed, I could not mature in my masculine identity, as long as I believed myself that marriage is necessary to become a better person.
Only recently I started to learn that I - as a single man - am a whole person. In fact, singleness can be a blessing to a man like me, a man who likes adventure, travelling and surprises in life.

However, there is one thing which sometimes still bothers me.

More and more of my friends get married and have children. I love to see their lives develop, so that is not the thing which bothers me. What bothers me is the subsequent formula which married Christians (should) adopt on priorities: first God, then their spouse, then their children, then their extended family and then the rest.
I fear to be left out in the outer 'rest' circle, and as more and more people get married, I will become more and more in the 'rest' category.

I understand that married men (or women) know the other side of the problem, they cannot see their friends as often as they would perhaps like to, because they must live according to that formula. So I guess we're pretty much in the same position in feeling left out.

Maybe, a conclusion could be, that - whether married or not - one must seek one's wholeness with the Lord. That His presence removes all loneliness.

Disappointment and Grace

Tonight we gathered with the ChristenUnie to prepare for the upcoming elections on 7 March.

We were distributing campaigning materials; posters, brochures, balloons, and, empty plastic bags with the ChristenUnie logo on them.
Especially the last items really disturbed me. How can a party with an environmentally friendly profile turn to such useless and polluting items? Who needs an empty plastic bag anyway?
As I raised criticism, I was told that this is not the right time to criticise.
I agreed that now it cannot be undone, but for the next campaign we should be more considerate towards our own programme and principles and - more important - the environment, God's beloved creation.

I accepted a hundred (or more) plastic bags, to be distributed (they should be put over the saddles of bikes - I guess that's typical Dutch). But I am still in a doubt whether or not to make use of them. I think, we will only loose support, because people will think that we do not practice what we preach.
I do not want to exaggerate things. And I want to acknowledge that no party and no campaign is perfect. I forgive my brothers and sisters. But yeah, I am a little bit dissappointed.

Still, I do believe that we (all Amsterdammers) should vote ChristenUnie. We know that nor the ChristenUnie, nor the candidates are perfect. We made mistakes, we make mistakes and we will make mistakes. But we are also covered by the grace and blood of Jesus.
Jesus will use us, in spite of us. We need people in the Amsterdam City Council who prayerfully oversee our city. Amsterdam is a centre of drug trafficking, human trafficking, prostitution and arms trade. This is the sad reality, which Christians should address. We cannot stay politically neutral, because God is not.
(I do not say that a Christian must vote ChristenUnie, but he/she should take a stand)

People, if you want, vote for me, or, any other member of the ChristenUnie. I am the number 11 of the election list.

Heart Revealer

"It was he who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, to prepare God's people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.'
I will contribute in a shared blog: Heart Revealer.
A Heart Revealer (or Prophet) aims to 'help people to walk closely with God and actively seek social justice. Heart Revealers are like the conscious of the church and are able to help people experience the divine presence.'

I never considered myself a prophet. Since I closely relate prophecy with the use of the Bible. And I'm not a keen Bible reader myself, I also seldomly quote bible verses in conversations. Yet, I think the very fact that I am not a litteralist, helps me to see things in a broader context, for instance the social, political or ecological environment.

In the next weeks I want to write about 'humans & the environment'. I believe that this is one of the major themes of our days. Pollution, destruction of nature, deforestation, harmful emissions and depletion of resources, are a major threat to all creation.
I believe that this is not the way God supposed it to be. If we try to find God's point of view, we will learn much about the relation between people, planet and God; and our purpose in this world.

Not a bad start for the 'Oranje'...

TURIN, Feb 12 (Reuters) - Dutch speedskater Ireen Wust won the Olympic gold medal at the women's 3,000 metres on Sunday with a powerhouse performance over her more-seasoned rivals. The 19-year-old Wust took charge from the start, clocking laps of about 31.5 seconds and finishing more than seven seconds faster than the previous best skater. "It was typical Wust race. You give it 100 percent and then you see where the ship ends up," the beaming teenager told reporters. "It's a little bit unbelievable." Wust was so dominant that her final time of 4:02.43 sent the crowd into a frenzy, four races from the conclusion. The inspired effort by the Dutch teen could not be matched by world record holder Cindy Klassen of Canada who had to settle for third after Dutchwoman Renate Groenewold, Wust's roommate at the Olympics, snatched silver in the final 20 metres. Even though Wust lost some ground in the final lap, slowing down by some two seconds, her time was still too good to beat.

Perhaps my last word would simply be: 'doctor...'*
It is good to know, however, that I believed that Jesus is the one who heals and gives life. To know Him is the best, whether I breathe or not.

Dear Jesus, give me and others the faith to persevere in You. Amen.

Mucho corazon (With a lot of heart)

"I play less, I want to keep my eyes dry..."
A love story from the Radio Netherlands website:

Street organs are at the heart of Dutch folk culture. And one of the oldest organ factories in the Netherlands is the Perlee Draaiorgel Fabriek in old centre of Amsterdam. The only other country with a similar passion for this unusual instrument is Cuba. In an effort to help rebuild old Cuban organs, Leon visits the town of Holguin, home to Cuba's best know organ makers. At a party on his last day in Holguin, Leon is introduced to Milades, the niece of a famed organ maker. For both of them, it was love at first sight; and in that moment they lost their hearts forever. The pair dream of a life together in Amsterdam, but Holland's strict immigration laws, combined with restrictive visa laws in Cuba, keep Leon and Milades physically apart. From his workshop in Amsterdam Leon composes organ music for Milades. Milades writes words of love. The pair are convinced they can surmount the barbed wire of bureaucracy. Their dreams are full of hope, but neither can be sure of a happy ending.

True Worship II - He is the Way (to a better world)

Also read the first 'True Worship' posting!

For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God afore prepared that we should walk in them.
(Ephesians 2:10)

Most of us (and probably you too) are part of sinful production system as an end-user, which means that we are at the end of a sinful production chain. However, if you would look at the whole chain, you will also see that you are only a very small part of the chain. So your personal contribution to this system is fairly limited as compared to the whole social-economic production system.
However, as Christians we do not only stand at the end of one chain; through Christ we are also standing at a new beginning. With a fairly small effort, we can actually accomplish a lot (because God works through us).

Practically this small effort comes down to the right investment of our currencies. By currencies I do not necessarily mean money, although that is certainly very important. But as a student for instance I had relatively much time to sacrifice for the worship of God. Or, perhaps you have talents, which you can use 'pro-poor'.

Because we realize that we are very blessed, with richness and above all with God’s Spirit. We also want to bless others. Furthermore, we really believe that we cannot be indifferent to the suffering in this world. Therefore, last Monday, a group of people met at my place to start a partnership with SOLIS.
There are many ways to help. Indeed, one of the ways for our church is to partner with existing projects, such as SOLIS.

SOLIS is a non-profit organization focused on ending poverty and creating economic sustainability in developing communities.
The tools are:

  • grants to finance food, medical, educational and shelter programmes
  • micro-loans to small businesses
  • short-term volunteer work for outreach programmes

The American organization already exists, it is based in L.A. We to partner with this organization, because we do not have to set up a separate structure. But also because SOLIS is a platform for participants; a rather flat organizational structure, which connects with other (established) aid and development programmes.

The key principles of the Solis Foundation are:

  • expressing our faith in Jesus Christ through serving the Community
  • helping to create sustainable communities
  • helping to alleviate the effects of poverty in developing communities
  • achieve transparency for Solis Foundation programmes and services
  • achieve accountability with Solis Foundation Recipients.

Lost World

“God admires all that he has made and finds it good” (Gen l:3).

Washington Post:
JAKARTA, Indonesia, Feb. 7 -- A team of scientists has discovered a lost world of rare plants, giant flowers and bizarre animals -- including a new species of honeyeater bird, a tree kangaroo and an egg-laying mammal -- on a mist-shrouded mountaintop in a remote province of Indonesia on New Guinea island.

Click here for an amazing slideshow.

According to the Book of Genesis, creation has an order and beauty that are to be respected by all. In the first creation story, “God admires all that he has made and finds it good” (Gen l:3). When God calls the first humans into being, God finds them “very good” (Gen 1:31). The first humans are uniquely made in God’s own image and likeness and are charged to take dominion over all that God has made (Gen 1:26). To be made in God’s image and likeness means, among other things, being called to cooperate with God in the care of his creation. To have dominion, far from being a license to exploit and use the earth for selfish purposes, is to accept a sacred trust given to all humans to be responsible stewards of all that God has made.

Faced with the widespread destruction of the environment, people everywhere are coming to understand that we cannot continue to use the goods of the Earth as we have in the past. . . . A new ecological awareness is beginning to emerge . . . The ecological crisis is a moral issue.
(Pope John Paul II “The Ecological Crisis: A Common Responsibility,” nos. 1, 15 December 8, 1989)

True Worship I - He is the Way (out of our sinful systems)

Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultles is this: to look after orphans and widows in distress and to keep one-self from being polluted by the world.
(James 1:27) Maybe reading my last posting on Kenya makes you feel bad. However, that is not my intention.
I get emotional too when I hear about people starving. Especially when I contemplate God's provision to meet basic needs for all people in the world. When we think deeper about this issue, we will realize that we are all part of a sinful production system. After all, we are all consumers, commuters, energy users and waste producers.
Instead of blaming God, we need to realize that the primary cause of this evil is our social and economic system. Our (Western) governments subsidize agricultural exports, and ruin local markets by dumping over-production. Sometimes we feel good about given development aid, however the 50 billion dollars we spend annually on development does not come close to the 380 billion dollars we pump into our agricultural exports.
Our demands to sustain our lifestyles has led to pollution and resource depletion in development countries. Development countries are so indebted that they cannot provide even the most basic public goods (e.g. water, sanitation, housing, electricity, etc.).
Even if development countries would have enough resources to provide public goods, local ruling classes often have no interest to help other people than themselves, their friends and their relatives.

I can hardly find a better proof for the Biblical description of our fallen state. We are caught up in a sinful structure.

Having acknowledged our worldly position, one could become cynical. Or, one of my friends even started to think that the world would be better off without him. He realized that there would be no other way out of this system than to die. I cry with him for this feelings of hopelessness and helplessness.

However, I also think there is something extremely hopeful and joyful. We don't need to die physically, Jesus Christ died for us. He became the way out out of our sinful systems by dying for our sins. I firmly believe that if you have died with him, you are now on another way, on a way to God, on a way out of this world.
There is nothing cynical about this belief.
Of course, we cannot make the world a better place, but Jesus can! And He did! It was He who fed the poor and healed the sick.

Failure of Kenya's Rains Puts 2.5 Million at Risk of Famine

By Paul Willis
The Independent, UK, Friday 13 January 2006

Northern Kenya - Nomadic farmers in the arid wastelands of northern Kenya are dying with their cattle, as charities warn a famine on the scale of Niger is threatening the region.
So far, scores of people, mainly children, have died and the UN has warned that 2.5 million people are at risk of starvation because seasonal rains failed for the second time in a year. The Kenyan government has declared a national disaster and called for 11 billion Kenyan shillings, about £90m, to be jointly raised by Kenya and the international community.
In the worst-hit north-eastern region close to the Somali border, many pastoral farmers have lost their entire livestock because rains expected in April and then October failed to arrive.
Local media has reported nearly 50 fatalities but it is feared the toll may be many times higher since most deaths are likely to have gone unrecorded because of the Muslim practice of burying the dead on the same day of death.
Relief efforts have intensified, with the Government sending the army to distribute supplies and the Kenyan Red Cross initiating a programme to buy cattle from destitute farmers.
The scale of the crisis has shocked aid agencies in one of Africa's more stable and affluent countries.
Oxfam's humanitarian programmes co-coordinator for Kenya, Josie Buxton, said the current level of aid had to at least double.

She said: "At the moment, it looks extremely serious and there is a very real risk that we could have a Niger-type scenario on our hands."

In the north-eastern district of Wajir, the village of Qu'laley lies in dusty bushland, about 200 miles from the Somali border. cores of hungry families have been arriving every day from the bush in search of water and food aid. he rotting corpses of cattle litter the area, scattered between the nomad's makeshift straw huts.
Outside their huts, veiled women prepare a porridge made from maize to feed their remaining livestock, which lie around listlessly in the sun. Othowa Jimale-Ali stands over the simple grave of his baby daughter dug in the scorched earth and marked poignantly by a leafy branch - one of the few pieces of greenery found in this dusty land.
The six-month old, called Fatima, died three days ago from chronic diarrhoea almost certainly caused by a weakening of her immune system because of malnutrition after her mother was unable to breastfeed.
Othowa, 50, said: "I've never known it like this, all the land is dry and there is nowhere to take our cattle. I have lost 50 cows now. It is the will of God and we must trust he will bring us rain."
Within Kenya, blame for the crisis has been levelled at the long-term policy of mass deforestation, which has turned arable farmland to arid desert.
Kenyan Nobel prizewinner, Wangari Maathai, said major deforestation, started by the British during colonial rule and continued legally and illegally after independence, had reduced indigenous forest cover to just 1.7 per cent.
"The tragedies this country are facing today such as drought, famine and poverty have been exacerbated by the gradual degradation of our environment - including indigenous forests," Ms. Maathai said.
Ms. Maathai, who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2004 for her devotion to Africa's forests, said Kenya needed at least 10 per cent of its land mass under forest cover to safeguard agriculture, health and water supplies.
Medical superintendent Dr. Eliud Aluvaala said that, despite fact-finding visits from government officials and the UN, the hospital had yet to receive any help.
He said: "It's no good sending fact-finding missions - that won't feed the children who are starving."
Ms. Buxton also criticised the response to the crisis. She said: "This is something that is happening time and again in Africa. A humanitarian crisis unfolds that we can see coming a long way off and yet despite warnings, nothing is done until it is too late."

Danish Cartoons - I - The Right to Blaspheme?

BBC News:

In Berlin, Die Welt argued there was a right to blaspheme in the West, and asked whether Islam was capable of coping with satire.
"The protests from Muslims would be taken more seriously if they were less hypocritical," it wrote in an editorial.

Washington Post:

"The appearance of 12 drawings in the Danish press provoked emotions in the Muslim world because the representation of Allah and his prophet is forbidden," the French afternoon newspaper France Soir wrote. "But because no religious dogma can impose itself on a democratic and secular society, France Soir is publishing the incriminating caricatures."

The newspaper's front-page headline declared: "Yes, We Have the Right to Caricature God," accompanied by a new cartoon depicting religious figures from the Muslim, Jewish, Buddhist and Christian faiths on a cloud. The Christian is shown saying, "Don't complain, Muhammad, we've all been caricatured here."

France Soir paired its story and caricatures with a column by French theologian Sohaib Bencheikh, who admonished: "One must find the borders between freedom of expression and freedom to protect the sacred." He added, "Unfortunately, the West has lost its sense of the sacred."

To all people who feel offended because of other people declaring the right to blaspheme...
I would like to quote Jesus' (Isa's) words in John 15:18

"If the World hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first."

Personally, I believe that we do not have any rights unless they are bestowed on us by God. 'The right to blaspheme God' therefore sounds very silly to me.
Yet, Jesus was and is still being blasphemed against. He was abused to the point that he was tortured and killed. He let this happen so that we would be forgiven and healed. If this sounds strange to you (and I do understand that this could sound foolish, especially when you hear this for the first time), learn more about Jesus, pray to Him and ask Him to show you who He is. Wanneer de wereld je haat...

Ik schreef het volgende commentaar op Trouw.nl :

Ieder die zich beledigd voelt om het zgn. recht op godslastering, zou ik graag het volgende willen meegeven. Jezus (Isa) zei (in Johannes 15:18):

St Francis' Prayer - II - An Honest Religion

When I read St. Francis' prayer, I see a very true religion. A religion which is not primarily rooted in a culture or in a particular time, a religion which is honest.
So many times I try to be like other people. So many times I compromise on true religion, because I want to be just like the others, or, I want to be better than the others.

Once I was studying hard for an examination. The readings were difficult and I had to invest much time in it. However, the examination turned out to be very easy. Afterwards I complained with a friend (a fellow student), that we had to study so hard when it turned out to be really unnecessary.

Then my friend told me a very true word. "You're complaining, but you forget what studying is really about. You have learnt a lot, whether the examination was easy or not; that's what it's about".

I want to be like others, or, better than others. And I have many more wrong motivations which keep me from truths. And I really believe that I have to pray for honesty. Because it is hard to be honest. It is hard to accept hardship, tears, anger, doubt and foolishnes, for the sake of truth, for the honour of our Lord.

St Francis' Prayer - I - Moge God ons Zegenen

A Prayer by St. Francis of Assissi (English version on JR Woodward's blog)

Amen.

Een Franciscaanse zegening. Franciscus van Assisi.
