Sony Reader, Also the new iPod in Europe?
I'm not particularly a tech enthousiast, but - for a change - I've got a gadget: the Sony Portable Reader System 505 (PRS-505), also simply referred to as 'Reader'. With 210 MB internal memory, expandable to 10 GB, this is truly a pocketsized library!The Reader is an early commercial application of the socalled e-ink technology. The images are displayed without backlight, so electronic documents appear to be printed on paper.
This special feature enables reading while sun bathing. Moreover, reading from e-paper is less tiring to the eye than normal computer screens. The absence of backlight also results in a very low energy use. In theory a charged Reader could display a single page for three years. In practice the Reader needs to be recharged more often, for instance after turning 3000 pages, or, after listening to MP3 audio for a couple of hours.
My Reader is imported from the States, where the Reader is already a hype - it is even called the new iPod. Unfortunately the Reader is still not on sale in Europe. A major disadvantage for the European Reader owners is the shortage of e-books in Sony Reader formaat (Bbeb formaat).
Sony's e-book store 'Sony Connect' does not sell in Europe because of different copy rights regimes. The Reader is compatible with PDF, Word and text formats and some Bbeb documents are available elsewhere on the internet, so the European Reader consumer still has enough to read. It should be mentioned however that PDFs are not always readable, because of the format's limited adaptability. Sony announced it will introduce software to convert PDFs to Reader format. Until then I read most PDFs in landscape (horizontal) display; the text becomes bigger and better readable, I have to turn pages more often though.
Alternatives for the European consumer are the Ilead by the Dutch company Irex Technologies and the Cybook Gen 3 by the French Bookeen corporation. Ilead had many advantages: WiFi connectivity (though slow), compatibility with more formats (e.g. the popular mobibook format), and a bigger 16 greyscales screen (the Sony Reader has 8). However Ilead's biggest pro is the possibility to write notes on the screen. The Ilead has a considerable downside though: its hefty price (around 650 Euro), almost three times as expensive as the Sony Reader.The Cybook Gen 3's price is comparable to Sony Reader's. It is compatible with more e-book formats, i.e. mobipocket. The Cybook has a smaller internal memory, 64 MB, but like the Sony Reader's and Ilead's, memory is expandable with external cards. A minor disadvantage is Cybook's weaker display with only 4 greyscales.
I didn't buy the Sony Reader because I wanted to save energy (by not using a computer for reading), or because I wanted to save trees (by not buying paper books). And even when I'd like to argue that I really need the device for my work,... I must admit what it all comes down to is: the Sony Reader is a very enjoyable gadget.

Sony Reader, ook in Nederland de nieuwe iPod?
Ik ben geen techfreak maar voor de verandering beschik ik nu eens over een gadget: de Sony Portable Reader System 505 (PRS-505), ook wel simpelweg 'Reader' genoemd. Met een geheugen van 210 MB, uitbreidbaar tot 10 GB, heb ik een bibliotheek op zakformaat!De Reader is gebaseerd op een relatief nieuwe technologie dat e-ink wordt genoemd. Het bijzondere is de weergave zonder verlichting (backlight), waardoor een electronisch document eruit ziet als drukwerk op papier.
Behalve de mogelijkheid te lezen in de volle zon, is het lezen zonder backlight minder vermoeiend voor de ogen. De energie die een normale scherm gebruikt voor backlight wordt bespaard. In principe verbruikt de Reader dan ook nauwelijks energie, een vol opgelade reader zou een pagina kunnen weergeven gedurende drie jaar. In de praktijk moet de Reader echter net wat vaker worden opgeladen, bijvoorbeeld na het omslaan van zo'n 3000 pagina's, of na het beluisteren van een aantal uren MP3s.
Mijn exemplaar komt uit Amerika, waar de reader al een rage is en zelfs de nieuwe iPod wordt genoemd . De Reader is helaas nog niet verkrijgbaar in Nederland of elders in Europa. Een groot nadeel voor de schaarse Nederlandse reader consument is dan ook het gebrek aan e-books in Sony Reader formaat (Bbeb formaat). D

De Reader leest echter wel PDFs, Word documenten en textdocumenten en Bbeb documenten zijn ook verkrijbaar elders op het internet zodat toch heel wat te lezen valt voor de Europese Reader consument. Wel moet worden opgemerkt dat PDFs soms slecht leesbaar zijn omdat het weergaveformaat beperkt aanpasbaar is. Sony heeft echter aangekondigt in februari met software te komen om PDFs te converteren naar Reader formaat. Ondertussen lees ik de meeste PDFs in horizontale modus, waardoor de teksten groter een leesbaarder worden, maar ik wel meer bladzijden moet omslaan.Alternatieven voor de Nederlandse consument zijn de Ilead van Irex Technologies en de Cybook Gen 3. De Ilead heeft als voordelen een groter scherm en een betere connectiviteit door WiFi (hoewel traag). De Ilead leest meer formaten dan de Sony Reader, waaronder het populaire mobibook (prc) formaat. Ilead's grootste voordeel is echter de mogelijkheid notities te maken door te schrijven op het scherm. Verder is de Ilead ook superieur ten opzichte van de concurrenten qua beeldweergave met 16 grijstinten (de Sony Reader heeft er 8). De Ilead heeft echter één groot nadeel: hij is drie keer duurder dan de reader.De Cybook Gen 3 is qua prijs vergelijkbaar met de reader. Hij leest meer formaten, o.a. mobipocket. De Cybook heeft een kleiner intern geheugen, 64 MB, dit is echter net als bij de Sony Reader en de Ilead uit te breiden. Daarnaast heeft de Cybook een iets slechtere beeldweergave met 4 grijstinten.
Ik zou willen beweren dat ik de Sony Reader heb vanwege allerlei nobele doelen, bijvoorbeeld dat ik het milieu bespaar doordat ik minder energie verbruik (dan wanneer ik een laptop zou gebruiken) en minder papier verbruik (dan wanneer ik een ouderwetse boek zou kopen). Of ik zou willen beweren dat ik de Reader écht nodig heb voor werk... maar ik moet toegeven dat de Sony Reader gewoon heel leuk speelgoed is.
