China tour: Harbin - China's Siberia

I am on a 10 day tour in China. The tour is part of an intercultural training, to prepare us for our two year stay in China. We will visit different places, universities and tourist traps in China.
I arrived in Beijing two days ago. Now I am in Harbin, not far from the Russian border. In 'oriental St.Peterburg', temperatures get as low as -30, is best known for its Russian style architecture, its ice sculpture and ice lanterns festival. Our group of 30 European researchers were, however, treated with not-so-arctic weather conditions, it's 10 degrees today.

Harbin prides itself for the Harbin Institute of Technology, one of the most acclaimed academic institutions in China. We will pay a visit later today. Three of our Science and Technology Fellowship Programme participants will work at this institute.

Other places I'll visit later this week are Chengdu, in the South, and Shanghai, on the East coast.
